What's the weather like in Albufeira?

If there’s one question I get asked more than anything else, it’s this: “What’s the weather like in (insert month here)?” So, I thought — what better way to kick off my blog than by answering it?

Now, unlike the Canaries (or other places further south), the Algarve is not hot all year round. Yes, we get long sunny summers, but we also have a winter — though in my 15 years living here, I’d still say it’s “nice” more often than “not nice.” Even in the colder months, it’s usually warmer and brighter than back in the UK.

Let’s break it down month by month so you know what to expect:

January – March

These are the trickiest months to predict. Some days you’ll be sitting on the beach in the sunshine at 22–25°C, and other days you’ll be wrapped up against wind and rain, thinking “this feels like all four seasons in one day.”My advice: pack for all eventualities. Bring layers, check my daily weather updates, and expect the unexpected. (This year, 2025, we’ve literally had summer in the morning and storms by the afternoon.)

April

In Portuguese, there’s a saying: “Abril águas mil” — which roughly means “April showers by the thousand.” Usually, we’ll get a solid week of rain at some point, but otherwise it’s quite mixed. Could be lovely, could be rainy.

May – September

This is the “safe” zone for sunshine lovers. Long warm days, bright evenings, and usually very little rain.

  • June – August are the hottest, with August almost guaranteed to be scorching - Although some evenings can still be cold, especially near the sea!

  • Heatwaves can happen — this June and September (2025) we hit over 40°C!

  • If you like it hot but not too hot, May, June (early), and September are ideal.

October – December

Autumn into winter is another mixed bag. I’ve had some of my favourite beach days in November, and I’ve also had weeks of grey, rainy skies. December can actually be lovely — I’ve spent many Christmas Days walking barefoot along the sand in the sunshine. Even at its coldest, it’s still a good deal warmer than the UK.

Final Thoughts

The Algarve weather is a little unpredictable outside of summer, but that’s part of its charm. You’ll always get plenty of light, sea air, and a few days of sunshine thrown in. If you’re coming outside peak season, layers are your best friend. And of course, keep an eye on my daily weather updates — I’ll tell you if it’s bikini or raincoat day!
